CONTEXT

A handful of reports – and a $15M business model under pressure

Schneider Electric's Resource Advisor launched in 2005 as a simple dashboard with a dropdown of canned reports. Most of the company's energy management work was still happening offline — account managers manually delivering PDFs to clients.

Despite that, the service generated roughly $15M annually. Schneider approached me to help reimagine the platform as a self-service SaaS, with two priorities: empower customers to drive their own analysis, and ship a dynamic reporting engine that could grow without bespoke work.

APPROACH

Discovery before pixels

I led internal workshops, sat with dozens of clients across utilities, manufacturing, and CPG, and trained alongside Schneider's energy analysts. The goal: deeply understand how energy data actually flows through a multinational portfolio, and where the human bottlenecks live.

Through a considerable amount of discovery work, including many iterations of information architectures, wireframes, and usability validation, I designed a new user interface and content structure for the product. Through collaboration with product owners, project managers, and developers, a long-term roadmap was created to realize the vision.

OUTCOME

From a side service to the industry benchmark

Client reception was off the charts and led to consistent positive revenue growth year-over-year for the following 13 years that I was principal product designer.  As of 2019, Resource Advisor was the leading energy management and sustainability SaaS solution globally and won numerous industry awards. Clients no longer numbered in the dozens, but into the thousands, and annual revenue exceeded $1 billion*.

From simple beginnings to a global market leader in energy and sustainability management, EcoStruxure Resource Advisor has become an industry leader in the management of industrial energy tracking and ESG reporting around the world.
in 2018, multiple new dashboard concepts were designed to allow the development team to experiment and try to push the boundaries of what they were able to create on the platform.

We went from 50% accuracy to above 90% data accuracy, completion, and assurance of the data with Resource Advisor.

- FORTUNE 500 FINANCE LEADER

With an over-abundance of data, the challenge for Schneider Electric and their customers was ensuring the data was accurate and presented clearly. A significant amount of time was spent interviewing stakeholders and end-users to understand how the data was gathered, followed by an effort to automate as much of that validation as possible.

With the commitments we've made to our investors, to our stakeholders, to the public, to have data that is not accurate or has gaps is just unacceptable. With a solution like this we get it right the first time.

- FORTUNE 500 EXECUTIVE

The largest contributor to dirty-data was end-user Excel documents and data entry errors. We addressed this by developing an integrated spreadsheet solution for data entry that matched and simplified the workflow for end-users. This allowed real-time validation and reporting, among other benefits.

We use this data to build business cases that set CO2 reduction targets... we rely on this system to tell us where we are and where we need to be.

- FORTUNE 500 SUSTAINABILITY LEADER

With the new design and features, new marketing materials were needed to showcase the new product. Additionally, a new mobile app was designed to focus on simple dashboards and KPIs for executives to reference quickly on their devices.
